No, I'm not in Rome and this is not the Colosseum. No, I'm not in Rome and this is not the Colosseum. This is the amazing amphitheatre in El Jem, a little village in Tunisia. It's the third largest amphitheatre the Romans built in what was then the city of Thysdrus. The amphitheatre was built around 230 CE and could hold no less than 35.000 spectators. It's now a UNESCO World Heritage site. Half an hour northeast of Tunis are the ruins of t Half an hour northeast of Tunis are the ruins of the ancient city of Carthage (probably best known for the Carthagenian general Hannibal, who tried to conquer Rome by crosing the Alps). Carthage was founded in 814 BCE and became one of the most powerful city states on the Mediterranean Sea. In 146 BCE the city was taken and razed by the Romans. As a part of Roman Empire, Carthage became once more a strategically important trade city, until in 429 CE the city was taken and razed by the Vandals. Nestled on the Mediterranean coast of North Africa Nestled on the Mediterranean coast of North Africa, Tunis became the capital of the Republic of Tunisia after the country gained independece from France in 1956.
